Thousands of S.M Supporters in Aden Demand “Independent State” in South Yemen
Thousands of Southern Movement supporters staged a march in Crater District of Aden to demand an independent state and the restoration of the former state in the south of Yemen Thursday.
The attendees marched in the streets of Crater District after the Al Maghrib Muslim prayers, chanting slogans against the unity and other racialist slogans against the presence of northerners in the south.
The protesters raised flags of the former state of Democratic Republic of Yemen(South Yemen), that merged into a unity with Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen) in May 1990, but a civil war in 1994 let southerners say that it has turned the unity into “an occupation.”
The protest ended where it was began, in a sit-in camp in the same city, where a speakers talked about the necessity of reaching an agreement among all the Southern Movement factions to “free the south.”
It is notice worthy that the Southern Movement is composed of several rival factions, despite that most of them agree on the principle of independence.
